Lesson planning

Lesson planning can be both demanding and dynamic. There is no such thing as a “perfect” lesson plan, students will quickly remind you of that. Even the most carefully designed lesson may need to be adjusted when certain students encounter challenges or require additional support. This is a natural and important part of teaching.

Education is an ever evolving field, and there is no one size fits all approach to instruction. Each student is an individual with unique strengths, needs, and learning preferences. Taking the time to understand how your students learn best is essential when designing meaningful and effective lessons.

For co-teachers, intentional and collaborative planning is especially important. Lessons should be designed to address the needs of all learners, ensuring that materials, resources, standards, and instructional delivery are aligned with the intended learning goals. This shared responsibility helps create a more inclusive and responsive classroom environment.

To support effective collaboration, consider using a shared drive or document platform so both co-teachers can access, review, and update lesson plans as needed. This allows for ongoing communication, flexibility, and consistency in instruction, even when planning happens at different times.

Attached is a co-teaching lesson plan template designed to support you and your co-teacher in clearly defining and sharing responsibilities within the classroom. This template encourages intentional collaboration by helping both educators plan roles, instructional strategies, and key components of the lesson in advance. It also includes space for thoughtful reflection after the lesson, allowing you to identify potential barriers to student success and consider adjustments for future instruction. Using this tool can help strengthen communication, promote shared accountability, and ensure that all students’ needs are consistently considered throughout the planning and teaching process.
